eFlyte (AP) and SMU Organize Linux LAN Gaming Competition for Student

eFlyte Asia Pacific Ptd Ltd was pleased to support the Singapore Management University (SMU), School of Information Systems, to organize the first ever Official Linux LAN Gaming Competition in Singapore on June 17, 2006.  The Linux LAN Gaming Competition was the highlight of the SMU’s Talent Nurturing Day to stimulate awareness and interest on Linux and Open Source software among Secondary and Junior College Students in Singapore.  The event was supported by the Infocomm Development Authority (iDA) of Singapore.

SMU’s organizing committee opted for the action-packed title “Think Tanks” from Garage Games. Their decision was guided by the following criteria:

  • Non-violent game nature

Think Tanks is a non-violent multiplayer tank battle game with no blood or gore.
  • Easy to learn gameplay

First time players can easily grasp the essentials of the game and quickly catch up in skills to the veteran action game players.  This leverages the playing field and gives a chance to the many participants which are new to online gaming.
  • Superior graphics and network play performance

Using the highly acclaimed Torque™ 3D engine, Think Tanks provides realistic 3D game environment on Linux machines.  Players can also send text messages to team members. Communication between the players adds a new dimension to the game and brings more excitement to playing.

eFlyte (AP), working in collaboration with Garage Games, provided technical support to install, configure and setup the players’ LAN-connected gaming computers and the servers.  The machines were supplied by Fujitsu Computers running Novell SUSE Linux Desktop 10.

Nine teams of five players, comprising students from various schools, participated in this Linux LAN gaming competition.  Prior to this event, the students had never used Linux. The event certainly met the organizers’ objective to change the students’ perception of Linux as an entertainment platform.  The teams played in a round-robin league system with the final two teams battling it out in a tense finale.  Eventually, Team 1, with its superior tactics, effective communication and shooting skills, emerged as the grand winner.  Throughout the competition, there were no technical problems encountered, proving the robustness of the Think Tank game and the underlying Linux operating system.

eFlyte (AP) was indeed honored to support the SMU in this event as it serves to promote awareness and use of Linux among the younger generation in Singapore.  It was also a good opportunity for eFlyte to see its game in heavy multiplayer action while acquiring valuable experience and gaining instant feedback which eFlyte can greatly benefit from, when deploying the game on the Inflight environment.

eFlyte Offers Inflight Gambling to Airlines

PRESS RELEASE -- In a move designed to strengthen its position as the inflight entertainment (IFE) industry's leading game designers and developers, eFlyte announced the introduction of their latest product for the airline industry -- inflight gambling.

At the conclusion of a two year development program, the company believes that the time is now right, from both a technological and financial perspective, to launch gambling on the world's international airlines.

The inflight gambling system developed by eFlyte can be easily installed, requiring no upfront costs and is supported by a comprehensive data tracking and financial management system to process the credit card transactions.

Quoted David Morgan, CEO of eFlyte, "We believe that the time is right for inflight gambling to be introduced. A combination of factors influenced our decision to launch now. eFlyte's software architecture is proven, the new generation of IFE platforms are totally compatible with our software, while financial back office support has been validated to ensure the efficiency and reliability of the transaction processing. In addition, a number of international airlines have expressed interest in being updated on the feasibility of inflight gambling after all the excitement of nearly a decade ago."

eFlyte intends to provide airline passengers a fun, challenging way to pass time on long flights, with the added bonus of accumulating winnings while relaxing at 35,000 feet. The system will have strict player controls, with access by the swipe of a credit card which will be credited or debited in the same way as any other credit card transaction. Continued Morgan, "The idea is to provide airline passengers with a low-stakes gambling environment that will co-exist with movies, audio tracks and even our own casual games."

According to Dan Harris, President of eFlyte, "The airline industry has always been enthusiastic about the revenue generation potential of inflight gambling. Accordingly, during the WAEA conference in Hamburg, we will meet with companies interested in introducing our program."

eFlyte is dedicated to the development, implementation and operation of inflight entertainment products and services with a growing portfolio of inflight software that includes messaging, destination guides, games and 3D technology.
